    Between now and October 1, 2010, Northern Virginia residents can vote on essays submitted by area rescue leagues, animal shelters, and related charities. The charity that submits the winning essay will receive a grant of $1500 that they can use to educate pet owners, provide veterinary care, spay or neuter their animals, and to find loving homes for their animals.

    Homeward Trails in Arlington, Virginia has won a $1500 grant to support its operations from the Northern Virginia Clean Water Partners. The group which encourages dog owners to keep their pets in safe and sanitary conditions, received more than 1800 votes for its essay "The View from Four Legs." The contest was sponsored to highlight the connection between sanitary conditions for dogs and clean water in local streams.
